GLP-1 Sharps Safe Return Network
Community drop-off for used GLP-1 pen needles. MediWaste runs a managed 6-12 month sharps return pilot with scheduled collections and duty-of-care reporting.
MediWaste runs a managed community drop-off service for used GLP-1 and diabetes pen needles. Residents get a safe, convenient return point, and councils get a documented, low-risk way to keep sharps out of recycling and general waste.
Why used pen needles need a separate route
- Needle-stick risk — discarded needles put residents, recycling-centre staff and waste crews at risk of injury.
- Recycling contamination — sharps in recycling streams disrupt sorting and cause avoidable safety incidents.
- Inconvenient disposal — residents can wait weeks for a household collection.
How the pilot works
- Council approves the pilot — the council selects the pilot area, host locations and service standards.
- MediWaste installs containers — approved, secure sharps containers with public signage.
- Residents return sharps — used pen needles go into the nearest return point.
- We collect and report — filled containers are collected and monthly reporting is provided.
Pilot scope
- A 6-12 month pilot, with the option to extend.
- 5-15 approved community return points, then scaling by uptake.
- Container supply, scheduled collections, replacements, cleaning and emergency call-outs.
- Duty-of-care documentation, collection logs and monthly reporting.
The service complements existing household clinical-waste collections. To discuss a local pilot, contact MediWaste or call 01322 879 713.
